Vacuum endometrial sampling
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) describes both heavy menstrual bleeding and abnormal timing in uterine bleeding in pre-menopausal women, and any uterine bleeding experienced in post-menopausal women.
Vacuum endometrial sampling is a minimally invasive procedure that is used in assessing the source of AUB. It is performed using a flexible, single-use, disposable suction curette, often known as a pipelle.
Training and Competency
Clinicians performing vacuum endometrial sampling should complete theory training and supervised competency assessment.
Theoretical training
We recommend that health practitioners read the Vacuum Endometrial Sampling training document, before completing the Abnormal Uterine Bleeding unit at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora.
Practical training
Trainees must complete a minimum of two endometrial vacuum sampling procedures under supervision.
If you intend to be doing only premenopausal sampling, these supervised procedures can be in premenopausal people only. If your future work will include sampling for PMB then one of the supervised procedures must be in someone who is menopausal, as the process can feel quite different.
