In 2022, Health New Zealand contracted NZCSRH to provide long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) training support.  LARCs are the most modern and effective reversible forms of contraception.  The aim of this initiative is to increase workforce capability in primary care and improve access to LARCs.

As part of this contract, NZCSRH are providing LARC train-the-trainer courses for health practitioners who are already competent in these procedures as per the Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: Health Practitioner Training Principles and Standards, and want to train others.

    Eligibility for LARC TTT Courses

We welcome all health practitioners including nurses, nurse practitioners, general practitioners, doctors and midwives from across the motu to attend the Train the Trainer course. Health practitioners can choose to become a LARC trainer in one type of LARC procedure, or more than one (IUC, Jadelle insertion, Jadelle removal).

Health practitioners must first meet the following criteria to become a LARC insertion/removal trainer:

    • provide the specified LARC at a frequency that maintains confidence and competency (ie, at least 10 procedures annually on average for each type of LARC procedure they provide training for),

    • demonstrate cultural safety and youth-friendly practices as articulated within their scope of practice,

    • be familiar with the Aotearoa New Zealand Guidance on Contraception,

    • have completed the theory components that trainees have completed, including the NCTS contraceptive counselling and IUC/contraceptive insertion and removal online courses, or equivalent,

    • be experienced in more complex insertions and removals and in managing side effects and complications,

    • be competent to the Long-acting reversible contraception health practitioner training principles and standards for LARC insertion and/or removal, AND

    • have training and/or experience in adult education, clinical training, or relevant train-the-trainer approaches.

The purpose of the NZCSRH LARC TTT course is to provide training in clinical training using a relevant train-the-trainer approach.

Therefore, competence in LARC procedures must be established prior to attendance on the NZCSRH LARC TTT course.

Competence can be demonstrated in a number of ways, as outlined in the Long-acting Reversible Contraception Principles and Standards for Trainers 2022

    Fees

From July 1, 2025, the LARC Train-the-Trainer course is offered free to all health professionals who meet the criteria to become a trainer.

    Workshop Attendance
To ensure we can continue to offer high-quality training, if a registered participant does not attend the workshop, and has not notified us in advance, a $500 fee may be charged. This fee reflects the costs incurred in preparing and running the course.

Course participants who are not already members of NZCSRH will receive NZCSRH Associate membership, valid up until the annual membership renewal in July of each year.
